Some rocks are more brittle than others, shatter more easily, and thus are better hosts for mineral deposition; ancient volcanic rocks are particularly good for this. In Australia, Canada, Venezuela and California there is a much higher incidence of gold deposits in ancient volcanic rocks punched through by newer magma bodies.
