During 2023, two contractors at Tarkwa died in incidents on the mine. In addition, a non-operational fatal incident occurred during the reconstruction of Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium in Tarkwa, a project funded by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation.

Damang Gold Mine
Abosso Goldfields holds a mining lease in respect of the Damang Mine dated 19 April 1995, as amended by an agreement dated 4 April 1996. This lease expires in 2025, but is renewable under its terms and the provisions of the Minerals and Mining Law, by agreement between Abosso Goldfields and the Government of Ghana

Funding for the Foundation is primarily through contributions from the Tarkwa and Damang mines, based on their production profitability. For every ounce of gold produced by the mines, one US dollar is donated to the Foundation, in addition to 1.5% of the mines' profits before tax (US$1/oz plus 1.5% of pre-tax profit).

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation scholarship scheme was initiated in 2005. To date, 2,448 students from host communities of the Tarkwa and Damang mines have received scholarships and bursaries.
